The Truth About Syria: Regime Change or Stopping the Carnage?

I want to talk about the sheer duplicity, lies, deception, and premeditated warmongering that is conditioning the debate on Syria currently in New York (UN) and Washington DC.

Let’s consider the facts for a second: Bashar Al-Assad has repeatedly told us that there is an externally directed insurgency affecting his country and causing at least part of the violence and fatalities in that county. A lot of people are dying in Syria but let’s be fair – we only have CNN and BBC telling us that these deaths are as a result of the exactions of the Government Security Forces -oh and also the U-Tube videos that are allegedly by embattled opposition forces. There is no way to verify who is posting these video or where they are being processed for U-Tube. No doubt the killing is occurring and the real victims are the people of Syria. However to be fair, both sides are fighting and according to some  media sources that can be considered more natural like Deutsche Welle and Al Jazeera, both sides are firing at predominantly civilian populated areas, ergo both forces are likely to be involved in the killing.

Also true that the US and its allies have been very clear and vocal from very early on that they are seeking regime change rather than stopping the violence and seeking a political transition process. However, what we know about Syria (see my last 2 posts on Syria) is that the security forces, police and the parliament all of which are composed of Sunnis, Shiites, Alawites and Christians remain loyal to the State. There have been no large-scale defections or denouncements – because of course all these elements also have access to U-Tube so why are they not denouncing Al-Assad if he is so unpopular and unsupported. The truth might be that the main formal political actors and systems might still support Bashar Al-Assad and therefore do not want to have unregulated and externally driven political transition but understand that they want to slowly introduce this on their own changes and timetable. The fact that these elements of analysis have never been presented by the “free” media and pundits that are daily mouthing off on Syria tells me that the Syria situation has not been analyzed with neutrality but with a deliberate “regime change” pathway in mind.

External Interference and the “third force”

Bashar Al-Assad and his government spokespersons have been clear. There is implication of externally financed militias inside Syria. A few days ago, the Syrian Permanent Representative to the UN commented that the Government and the formal registered Syrian opposition are together battling the “third force”. This reference has been made repeatedly since before the Kofi Annan plan as agreed but no one has listened. It is likely that like in Iraq afar Desert Storm 1 and 2;  and in Libya, Saudi Arabia the motherland of Al Qaeda, has been pushing in financing to Sunni mosques and Sunni organizations within Syria ostensibly for the purpose of religious mobilization for he last two and a half years. In Iraq, the months before we formally heard that Al Qaeda was involved in the increasing sectarian violence, the violence and Sunni mobilization had started under organization of Saudi Arabia and its “NGOs”. Anyone who was in the know in Iraq at the time can confirm this.

Since the initiation of the conflict, Turkey, a NATO member state has been implicated in the war inside Syria. Turkey with support from US and others have been providing military and non military support to Syrian Rebels. Now Turkey is the staging post for a large-scale military assistance program to the Syrian rebels across the rocky border passes. This has two implications. Firstly, that all of NATO is involved in arming the rebels and secondly, that Turkey is doing this in exchange for something that they value – a concession on the Kurdish situation or worse, a huge concession on the future of secular Turkey that is currently being stifled by Erdegan Government.

Today (06/21), New York Times wrote that CIA is involved with Turkey in providing light and medium range weapons as well as communication equipment to the Syrian Rebels. So de-facto the US is already implicated and involved in the Syrian conflict.

The evolution of the conflict of Syria is following the path of Iraq where Saudi Arabia, the US, Turkey, Iran even Qatar, are embroiled in a suicidal war. The truth is slowly being exposed and also accounts for why the only means of actually verify facts on the ground, has been compromised. The only neutral force able to now establish the truth is the UN Monitoring Mission led by Norway’s General Mood. Will he be allowed to do so?

Conclusions

The hypocrisy of the US and NATO countries in bashing China and Russia in international media to stop supplying weapons to the Al-Assad government, yet the US and NATO countries are doing exactly the same or worse, supporting Syria Muslim Brotherhood to fight the Government. Russia has a longer term defense cooperation with Syria which is logical as a counterpoint to the US defense and intelligence relationship to Israel. Russia might have been ferrying weapons to Syria and the question is, why this is so bad if the US is doing the same thing. Hypocrisy!  Deceit!

I am only more worried for the Syrian people who are now liable to lose their whole country because of the plans of the US, NATO and Iran. I wonder how we can still moderate the violence and the spillover of this violence to neighboring countries?
